About Me
The Rangers Charity Game is a really important event for Scarsdale Youth Hockey and I’m thrilled to participate in it. Our Learn-To-Play program (Mite Black) is the foundation of Scarsdale Youth Hockey and developing it is essential for the long-term success of our program. The kids that learn to love hockey early, develop their skills and create friendships are the same kids that stay in the program through the years. The Rangers Charity Game is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and funds for our program and to skate with fellow coaches, friends and NHL players.
I grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, 65 miles of Denver, skiing and playing hockey, then moved to Minnesota after high school to play Junior hockey. In high school, I begged for a job at the local rink and became a skating guard and Zamboni driver just so I could skate after the rink closed. My friends and I spent a lot of time playing on frozen lakes or on my backyard rink until we were numb and the sun went down. Almost 30 years later and after a nearly 20 year hockey sabbatical (I don’t know why), I’m now thankfully back in the sport with two kids in the Scarsdale program. Now every winter, I build a rink for my kids, although given the warmer weather lately, the rink spends a lot of time as a giant bird bath, but it’s still worth it to me. I’m the only one I know who prays for freezing weather. I’ve been coaching hockey in Scarsdale for four years and running the Mite program for two years with my wife, Shereen. Teaching kids to play, figuring out what motivates them and watching them improve is an incredibly rewarding process and it’s been a fascinating learning experience for me.
